Socio-economic Development

AGENDA Institute strongly believes in the potential of sustainable socio-economic development. The development of human and social capital is considered by AI to be advanced in line with economic growth and integrated environmental extension. Decent work conditions and quality employment are effectively related to education attainment and its quality. However, these conditions can be continuously improved only if the public expenditures are used appropriately. AI considers that by diligently pursuing macroeconomic occurrences and by professionally informing the public about their progress and impact, it is contributing to increase accountability of socio-economic policy formulation and implementation as well as to promote the country’s sustainable development through better policy interventions.

AI has conducted several projects in the areas of social and economic development. The dissemination tools used have been selected very carefully in order to allow broader participation of the expertise in the research rounds. The policy research has focused on labor market developments, mostly on challenges faced by youth and women in Albania. The labor market was analyzed in the perspective of its informality and division of labor according to economic sectors. Another key element has been the effective collaboration and partnership building with important players, such as Trade Unions, Employer’s Associations, Think-Tanks and other civil society actors. AI has elaborated together with those partners recommendations on improving the decent work situation in Albania, in accordance with ILO and EU perspectives. AI has also analyzed the business climate, labor demand and recruitment practices in the country through corporate-level research. Corporate governance features of Albanian labor market were surveyed and compared with those of countries in three additional clusters of development: fully functioning market economy (Switzerland), advanced developing country and recent EU member (Romania) and less developed transitioning economy (Moldova). In regards to welfare distribution and poverty alleviation, an important research exercise has been the analyzing of remittances inflow and their destination in the country during 3 consecutive years of post global financial turmoil (2009-2011). These survey results have been utilized by different actors to elaborate further analyses related to welfare status of Albanian households.

AI will further elaborate research in this area primarily by focusing on four aspects: Economic issues; Labor market development; Education, and pursuing Macro-economic developments.
